Since November 2021, climate activists in Australia have successfully demonstrated the motivation, intent and capability to target major bulk handling infrastructure with disruptive action as a means to bring media attention to or further their cause. The safety, operational, commercial and reputational risks presented by such action have significant potential consequences for bulk handling entities. What can bulk operators do to mitigate the risk of harm and business disruption? This presentation will outline some of the options available, that have already been proven effective in comparable critical infrastructure environments.
Spencer Wakelam is a Senior Security and Risk Adviser with Security Consulting Group. He is a risk and resilience manager with over 30 years’ experience gained from military and police service, plus 17 years in corporate and government roles across three continents, specialising in the protection of transport and critical infrastructure. He holds a Master’s Degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, and in 2019 was named Best In-House Security Director at the Australian Outstanding Security Performance Awards for his innovative strategies to reduce protester activity in the freight rail industry.
